About the role

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to join our early-stage climate tech startup, you’ll not only gain valuable knowledge about climate change and carbon offsetting but also contribute to the development of our company's future. This role requires a combination of people management, strategy/tech leadership, and individual contributor work. Therefore, we are seeking a self-motivated, entrepreneurial engineer who excels in a fast-paced startup environment and enjoys taking ownership.
As the Head of Engineering, you will play a crucial role in growing our engineering function and ensuring that engineering initiatives are aligned with business needs and goals. You’ll be the line manager for all engineers and collaborate closely with Product and Design to drive projects using your technical and leadership skills. Your expertise and input will be essential in shaping our technical architecture, driving our mission forward, and making a tangible impact on the planet.

What you’ll be using

Typescript, React, and Next.js to write our application code
tRPC to implement APIs for the front-end client
TailwindCSS for component styling
PostgreSQL for persistent data storage
Vercel, Supabase and Google Cloud for most of our infrastructure

What you’ll be doing

Lead a high-performing engineering function and work closely with product and design to develop innovative products to support the company's mission and strategic goals.
Serve as the technical lead, providing direction, effective delegation, tradeoff management, and strategic decision-making to steer the team towards success.
Partner with product and senior management to develop product and company strategies and break them down into engineering initiatives and objectives.
Set a high bar for technical excellence by leading by example, recognising exceptional work, and identifying areas for improvement.
Facilitate and drive technical discussions with the team, ensuring well-informed engineering decisions are made to factor in long-term tradeoffs and business needs.
Line-manage junior and senior engineers, helping them to grow in their careers.
Actively foster an inclusive and diverse team environment, promoting a sense of belonging and creating opportunities for the team to contribute and be heard.
Keep up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, identifying opportunities to enhance the company's products and development practices.
Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, collaboration, and customer-centricity within the product team and across the organisation.
Advocate for and contribute to the company's engineering culture, promoting knowledge sharing, collaboration, and a strong sense of ownership and accountability.

Who we’re looking for

Full-stack product engineer: You have extensive experience collaborating with non-technical colleagues and tackling complex technical challenges across the whole stack to deliver impactful solutions with effective momentum.
Proven track record: You have a history of launching and maintaining software products with minimal guidance and developed a deep understanding of modern development practices and technologies.
Tech lead experience: You have technically led teams to good outcomes, making critical decisions and ensuring that projects are delivered on time and to a high standard.
Product focus: You are passionate about building high-quality products, making effective tradeoff decisions to meet customer needs and deliver business value, and are comfortable being proactive with your ideas.
Management experience: You’ve managed junior and senior engineers, helping them grow in their roles and develop their skills, and you’ve contributed to creating a healthy and effective engineering environment.
Strategic thinker: You consider the long-term impact of your decisions and the strategic goals of the business when making technical decisions, and you enjoy breaking down product strategies into engineering initiatives and objectives for the team.
Entrepreneurial spirit: You’re excited to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous startup environment and thrive on taking ownership of large product and engineering initiatives.
Open-minded and inclusive: You can work effectively with diverse colleagues and be open to new ideas and perspectives.
Continuous learner: You’re committed to staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and best practices and are eager to apply new learnings to your work.

Hybrid working model with 2 days a week in our London Bridge office
Holidays: 25 days holiday (excl. bank holidays) + one bonus for your birthday
